Map Of Shame

The "Shame Map" project provides a striking visualization of where each U.S. state falls short, compiling data to highlight the single metric in which it ranks last nationally. This unflattering portrait reveals that states' "shames" span a wide range of critical areas, including major categories like Economy, Public Education, Health, and the Natural Environment. For instance, the initial data identifies Louisiana as the "Overall Worst State," New Mexico as last for Public Education, and Mississippi as bottom for both Economy and Health. Beyond these broad composite scores, the map also captures highly specific and tangible lowlights that impact daily life, such as Massachusetts having the nation's worst traffic, Maryland being the epicenter for bed bug infestations, and Maine suffering from the highest rate of Lyme's disease. Other states face significant challenges in economic and personal security, with California ranking last in affordability, West Virginia in employment, and Florida in identity theft. The data also touches on quality of life and safety, with Alaska ranking last in this category, North Dakota in workplace safety, and New Mexico having the most assaults per capita. A breakdown of all compiled metrics shows these last-place finishes are distributed across various categories, from major systemic issues to more niche problems. While the prototype map highlights these initial findings, it also shows many states still awaiting data, painting an incomplete but already compelling picture of national rankings.
